Wai Kika Moo Kau

Wai Kika Moo Kau is a vegetarian café situated in the Brighton Lanes. They serve a range of breakfasts, pitta pockets, burgers and salads. I must admit, it took me a while to notice the meaning in the name, ‘why kick a moo cow’, in case you haven’t got there yet either! My husband and I visited this café for breakfast one weekday morning, at around 9.30am. When we arrived the place was very empty, but people soon started to arrive.

The waitress was very friendly and polite. I ordered the full vegetarian breakfast (minus a couple of items) and my husband chose the American style breakfast. The breakfasts were £6.75 each. There were a few different options available, including different types of beans, and a choice of either potato rosti or chips. To drink, I had apple juice from a carton (£1.75) and my husband had a banana milkshake (£3.50). The apple juice was a bit overpriced considering it came from a carton. The milkshake was much more milk than banana, and could have done with being a lot thicker and a bit sweeter!

Cooked Breakfast

The food was freshly cooked and looked very nice. The eggs were good, but I wasn’t keen on some of the other items. The potato rosti was far too peppery for my liking, and I wished I had chosen the chips instead, especially when I saw another customer’s chips and they looked really good! The mushrooms didn’t taste like the usual mushrooms you get with a fry up, but I’m not sure what was different about them. The sausages had a hard skin like they had been deep fried. But my husband really enjoyed his breakfast. His American-style pancake tasted really fresh and authentic.

The food was okay, but I think £18.75 plus tip for two breakfasts with drinks is a bit too expensive, especially taking into account that the decor and menus etc are a bit scruffy and much more café-like than restaurant-like. I would consider revisiting this place, and perhaps trying out their lunch options next time, but I am not in a hurry to return.
