Win Vegetarian Opti3 Omega-3 Supplements!

Opti3 bottle

The health benefits of oily fish have been widely publicised. However, fish stocks are in decline, and many of us choose not to eat fish for ethical reasons. The good news is that the beneficial omega-3 oils can now be obtained from algae (which is where the fish obtain the oils from) and these algae oils have been extracted and purified to produce some excellent fish-friendly vegetarian and vegan supplements.

Opti3 is the only vegan source of complete omega-3 EPA, DHA, SDA and ALA that is fully approved for sale in Europe. It has been stringently tested to meet strict regulations, and it is also registered with the Vegan and Vegetarian societies.

The nutritional benefits of Opti3 omega-3 are exactly the same as the benefits obtained from fish oil derived omega-3. Many health benefits of omega-3s have been reported - these are outlined on the Opti3 website. Adequate intake of omega-3 oils may be particularly important during pregnancy and breast-feeding, to support the development of the baby’s brain. Women of childbearing age are recommended to eat one or two portions of oily fish per week, but not more, given concerns about the toxic contaminants found in fish. The advantage of Opti3 is that it contains all the benefits of fish-oils, but without the toxins, so it’s perfectly safe to take during pregnancy.

I have been taking Opti-3 for the past couple of weeks. Whilst I can’t comment on any potential health benefits (since I’ve no means to measure these) - I am able to describe what the capsules are like. Each capsule is about 23 mm long. This may seem large compared to a paracetamol, but it’s comparable to fish oil tablets, and I found them very easy to swallow. The capsules themselves have no odour at all, but if you pierce them, the oil inside smells a bit like seaweed/fish, as you might expect from a product taken from the sea. If you’d like to give the oil to your children, you can pierce the capsules with a knife, and the oil can be taken on it’s own or combined with food. You can buy the capsules direct from the Opti3 website, for £14.95 per bottle (containing 60 capsules) plus postage and packing (£2.95 for UK orders), and currently if you buy 2 bottles you get a third bottle free.

The generous people at Opti3 have given us 4 bottles of their omega-3 supplements to divide between 2 lucky Veggie Advisor readers!
